How To Guide

May 7, 2025

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your home, and that includes cleaning household appliances. Over time, grease, grime, and mineral buildup can affect performance, create odors, and even pose safety hazards.

In this Spring Home Operations Challenge, we’ll tackle cleaning household appliances like your microwave, ice maker, air fryer, coffee machine, toaster, and garbage disposal. Follow our quick guide and materials list to get everything sparkling!

1. Cleaning the Microwave

A dirty microwave can harbor bacteria and leave lingering smells. Here’s how to refresh it:

Materials Needed:

Quick Guide:

  1. Mix equal parts water and vinegar in a bowl.
  2. Microwave for 2 minutes (the steam will loosen grime).
  3. Let sit for 1 minute, then wipe down the interior with a sponge.
  4. Remove the turntable and wash it separately with soap and water.

2. Refreshing the Ice Maker

Mineral deposits and mildew can affect ice quality. A simple cleaning keeps it fresh.

Materials Needed:

  • 1 cup distilled white vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ tsp bleach (optional for sanitizing)
  • Soft cloth

Quick Guide:

  1. Empty the ice bin and turn off the ice maker.
  2. Run a vinegar-water mixture through the system to dissolve buildup.
  3. For sanitizing, use a diluted bleach solution (rinse thoroughly).
  4. Wipe down the interior with a damp cloth before restarting.

3. Deep Cleaning the Air Fryer

Grease and food particles can cause smoke and odors—regular cleaning prevents this as well as cleaning out the water tank to prevent mold. To note, I have the Insta Pot Air Fryer, but always be sure to check with your manufacturer before as different models require different filters!

Materials Needed:

Quick Guide:

  1. Unplug and let cool completely.
  2. Remove the basket and tray, washing them with soapy water.
  3. Check for a replaceable filter (some models have one near the fan).
  4. Wipe the interior with a damp cloth to remove grease.

4. Maintaining the Coffee Machine

Old coffee oils and mineral deposits can make your brew taste bitter. I like to make sure I clean at least once every few weeks to make sure my machine is working as brand new!

Materials Needed:

Quick Guide:

  1. Replace the water filter if needed.
  2. Add scoop of coffee machine powder cleanser into water tank and run a cleaning cycle.
  3. Follow with 2-3 cycles of plain water to rinse.
  4. Wipe down the interior coffee machine and and carafe with soapy water.

5. Cleaning the Toaster or Toaster Oven

Crumbs can accumulate and become a fire hazard—don’t skip this step!

Materials Needed:

  • Soft brush or toothbrush
  • Damp cloth
  • Baking soda paste (for tough stains)

Quick Guide:

  1. Unplug and shake out crumbs over a trash can and/or remove tray on the bottom of toaster oven and use a brush to scrub the crumbs and debris off.
  2. For stuck-on grease, apply baking soda paste, scrub gently, then wipe clean.
  3. Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth.

6. Freshening the Garbage Disposal

Food buildup can cause odors and clogs—deep clean every 6 months using an easy at-home concoction.

Materials Needed:

  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon wedges
  • Dish soap

Quick Guide:

  1. Run cold water and turn on the disposal.
  2. Drop in a handful of ice cubes to sharpen the blades.
  3. Add lemon wedges + a few drops of dish soap for a fresh scent.
  4. Let it run for 30 seconds, then rinse with water.
