As the leaves change and the air crisps, it’s the perfect time for a fall home refresh. It’s easy to neglect deep cleaning laundry machines (i’m guilty of this too) but as part of my Fall home intensive series, we’re tackling this task together to ensure they’re operating efficiently and leaving your clothes smelling fresh and clean!
As the leaves change and the air crisps, it’s the perfect time to launch my Fall home intensive series to help you tackle deep cleaning tasks around the home that are may be safety risks or costing you money! This series will offer expert how-tos, tips I’ve learned along the way, checklists, and practical hacks to help you tackle every nook and cranny in your home.
Why Deep Clean Laundry Machines?
- Prevent odors: Over time, detergent residue, mold, and mildew can build up, leading to unpleasant smells on your clothes.
- Improve washing efficiency: A clean machine can wash more effectively, ensuring your clothes are thoroughly cleaned.
- Save money: A clean machine can help prevent premature wear and tear on your appliances, saving you money in the long run.
- Reduce fire risk: A clogged dryer vent is a major fire hazard. Regularly cleaning your dryer vent is essential for safety.
Part 1: Supplies for Washing Machine
Deep Cleaning Your Washing Machine
Step 1: Clean the detergent dispenser drawer
Most people assume this drawer is clean since the only thing being added are detergent, bleach or softeners however small dark spaces combined with detergent residue can build up in the drawer, leading to mold and mildew. Cleaning this regularly prevents odors and ensures your detergent is dispensing correctly.
First, add a couple of tablespoons of the distilled white vinegar (which helps remove mold) to a bowl of warm water and dip your microfiber cloth in and start scrubbing the drawer until clean. For any corners, you could use an old toothbrush to really get into the nooks and crannies! I like to wear rubber gloves when cleaning.
Step 2: Clean the inside of the machine
Run a hot water cycle with the washing machine descaler tablets – this is my favorite brand to use and they also have all different descalers for a variety of appliances around the house! They are eco-friendly, work with all washer types, when exposed to water they break down into deep scrubbing powder cleaners, eliminate odors and come in a pack of 24!
Step 3: Clean the rubber gasket and drum
The rubber gasket and drum can harbor a ton of bacteria and mold, cleaning them helps prevent odosr and ensures your clothes are fully sanitized with every wash! To clean, use the microfiber cloth with vinegar to remove all residue. Feel free to go in with the brush again for any pesky remains.
Step 4: Leave the machine door and detergent drawer open to dry
After freshly cleaning, make sure to leave all doors open as moisture can promote mold and mildew growth. Air drying helps to prevent this buildup and is good practice to keep open after every laundry cycle.
Part 2: Supplies for Dryer
Deep Cleaning Your Dryer
Step 1: Disconnect your dryer from the power outlet
This just ensures your safety while working on the dryer.
Step 2: Clean out the lint trap
This is important as a clogged dryer vent can restrict airflow, leading to longer drying times and increasing the risk of a fire.
First, take out the trap and remove all lint. Then, go back in with the dryer vent attachment to vacuum additional lint that accumulates in the dryer drum. This attachment is great because it fits on most standard vacuums and allows you to really get into the hard-to-reach spots and angles.
Step 3: Wipe down the dryer drum
Using the damp microfiber cloth, wipe down the dryer drum to remove any remaining residue and prevent odors.
Step 4: Plug back in and you’re all set!
Thanks for following along my Fall home intensive series. By following these steps and incorporating regular maintenance, you can ensure your laundry machines are clean, efficient, and odor-free and have the satisfaction that you’re appliances are working their best!
